Lobster fleet blessed

The annual Blessing of the Fleet at Beachport will be held on Saturday afternoon (October 1) ahead of the start of the second month of the 2022/23 lobster fishing season.

Father Lyndon Sulzberger of the Millicent/Penola Anglican pastoral district will lead the mid-afternoon service at the foreshore war memorial rotunda.

The jumping off the jetty to retrieve the blessed cross will go ahead and access will also be made available by the maintenance crews to the general public.

Around 20 professional lobster vessels have Beachport as their home port.

The majority of the skippers and crew are expected to steam past the jetty and receive a blessing from Father Lyndon.

The ceremony dates back decades and is organised by the Beachport Professional Fishermens Association in conjunction with the churches of Beachport.

Similar religious ceremonies are held at Robe and other coastal communities at around this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the long-running Beachport street market with dozens of stalls will be held along a closed Railway Terrace earlier in the day.

Saturday is the start of the Labor Day holiday long weekend as well as the South Australian school holidays.

The open-air market is conducted under the auspices of the Beachport District Development Association and is one of three staged by it each year.

The others are held at Easter and Christmas when the seaside port fills with holidaymakers.
