‘Lucrative’ opportunity

Alucrative South East professional abalone licence has come onto the open market with bids in excess of $5m being sought for the authority, vessel and equipment.

There are only six such licences for this region and they are currently held by a Port Lincoln company and a Queensland firm as well as individuals whose home addresses are given as Millicent, Portland, Allendale East and Mount Gambier.

The PIRSA public register states that no licence holder has any demerit points while the six vessels used and their masters are also listed.

They include former AFL footballer and incoming Hatherleigh coach Tom Hutchesson.

The fishery is managed via a quota system which is reviewed each year.

The licence on offer has a current annual entitlement of 22,000 kg of black lip and 300kg of green lip abalone.

Fishing is permitted from the Murray Mouth to the Victorian border.
