Memorial to be erected

Apermanent memorial to late Rendelsham resident Sam Matthews is to be erected at Penola High School.

The popular teacher, family man and surfer lost his year-long cancer battle last month.

A memorial service for the 38-year-old married father of two was held at the Beachport Surf Beach on Friday afternoon.

Penola High School principal Lesley Okholm was among the mourners to pay respects to Mr Matthews.

“Around 20 past and present staff (as well as students) of students and their families assembled at Beachport to farewell our much loved and respected teacher with his family and friends,” Ms Okholm said.

“This week we will have a school assembly to enable us all to reflect and we plan to make a memorial reflective garden on the school grounds very soon, containing a surfboard seat and Sam’s favourite tree, the Wattle.

“If anyone has a surfboard tucked away in a shed somewhere that we could use for this purpose, we would be most appreciative.”
