New addition for Millicent RSL

Arare knife from Nepal has recently been added to the collection of the Millicent sub-branch of the Returned and Services League.

The mounted Gurkha Kukri was presented to the sub-branch by service member Dieter Schueller.

He had acquired the item while on a posting with the Air Force to the RAAF Butterworth base in Malaysia.

Mr Schueller presented the knife for display in the RSL office alongside many other historical items.

The Kukri is the traditional fighting knife of the Nepalese Gurkha.

It is not only a weapon in Nepalese society, it also serves as a household knife.

It also carries traditional beliefs, values and myths and has strong religious significance.

Australian servicemen have served alongside Ghurkhas in a number of conflicts and on training exercises in Australia and overseas.

A close working relationship has been established over many years.
