New tennis season served

The Mount Gambier Tennis Association is ready to serve up the new season on October 14.

MGTA president Andrew Vandenhurk said the new season will have 35 senior teams nominated to play.

“This is an increase of two teams from last season, which is a great improvement to see for local sport,” he said.

“The 2023/24 season sees the introduction of the Men’s Doubles competition on a Saturday afternoon.

“While the format of the men’s doubles is yet to be decided the competition seems to be gaining some good momentum.”

Vandenhurk said at the moment 55 junior teams have nominated to participate this season.

“Unfortunately the number of teams has gone down nine teams from last season which is quite disappointing to see,” he said.

However, in good news Vandenhurk said OGR KIA had signed on to return this season as the association’s major sponsor.

“We have had a long-standing relationship with OGR, which is greatly appreciated,” he said.

“This season there will be no Friday night matches, this change is due to the deterioration of light towers at Olympic Park, now unusable for competition tennis.

“A lack of direction from the Mount Gambier City Council regarding Olympic Park and other tennis facilities in the area is hindering our progress to plan for the future.”
