Penola soars to Sims Shield win

UNDER 12 – SIMS SHIELD

Penola 6/85 d. North Sportsmans 7/33

North Sportsmans travelled to Penola on Wednesday for its Round 2 clash in the MGDCA U12 Sims Shield.

North Sportsmans won the toss and elected to bat first in the damp conditions.

The early breakthrough was made by Josh Manninen, who bowled E. Barry for 0 and regular wickets fell thereafter.

Oliver Liddie and Jessie Mitchell had a good final wicket stand and took the total from 12 to 33.

Sid Tucker bowled well for Penola grabbing two wickets with both Josh and Jim Manninen also bowling well and each picking up a wicket.

An excellent opening partnership between Will Harris and Josh Manninen led Penola to ease pass the target without losing a wicket.

They then went on to post a total of 85 for the loss of six wickets.

Best contributors with the bat for Penola were Harris (18 ret.), Josh Manninen (16 ret.) and Jim Manninen (10 ret.).

The pick of the bowlers for North Sportsmans were Oliver Liddle and Carson Bradley with two wickets a piece.

Next week Penola take on South Gambier in a two-dayer while North Sportsmans has the bye.

UNDER 14 – HALLS SHIELD

South Gambier v West Gambier

West captain Tom Richards won the toss and elected to bat, opening

He opened with Jaxon Hewlett and they were up against some tight bowling from openers Jaggar Geary and Kobi Maxwell. Both retired not out with Hewlett on 0 and Richards on 8)

Kahne Jeffrey and Kallan Price were next up to bat, witth Jeffrey making 10 before retiring and Price notching up 4 before South’s Mason Rogers bowled him.

That brought in Ethan Brook and Connor Tweddle to the crease, with Xavier Liddle coming in to bowl and promptly removing Brook for 6. Tweddle was then run out by South’s Miller Bradley getting the ball in quick to keeper Scott McBain.

Some good bowling from South’s bottom order kept West to 53 before the 20 overs were done.

Best with the bat for West was Jeffrey (10*) and Richards (8*).

Best with the ball for South was Little and Bradley taking 1/1.

South Gambier started their innings with openers Shoeb Khan and Scott McBain.

Some great bowling by Tom Richards saw Khan out for a duck, which brought Jaggar Geary in and from there runs started to flow.

McBain faced all his balls and retired on 4 which then brought Kobi Maxwell to the crease and was dismissed straight away by Lachlan Moss.

Hunt was dismissed by Moss and Geary made 24 before hitting one straight in to Richards’ hands.

A few more batters were out leaving South at 8/42.

Miller Bradley and Lincoln Holtham were able to stick around and get South over the line just before a heavy shower came through.

Best with the bat for South were Geary (24) and Bradley (8*). Best with the ball for West were Sam Pearce 2/2 and Jaxon Hewlett 2/3.

UNDER 17 – O’DONOGHUE SHIELD

East Gambier v West Gambier

In the 20/20 match East won the toss and elected to bat.

Richards and A. Clarke started off strong, making opportunities from edge balls and slowly adding to the scoreboard.

In the sixth Richards was caught and Clarke had to retire, but not before hitting a couple of sixes.

West then managed to grab a couple of quick wickets with the score 4/50 by the end of the ninth over.

East managed to steady and put some more runs on the board with Skeer also retiring and R. Clarke assisting with some runs before being bowled by Gentile.

East finished the innings 7/99, best with the bat were A. Clarke 26*, N Skeer 13* and J McCarthy 13.

Best with the ball for West were H O’Loughlin 2/9 and C Gentile 1/5.

In West’s innings the runs took a few overs to come, with Rothall being caught early by Lawrence and the score 1/2.

Prior and Case managed to get some runs on the board with an impressive knock from Prior retiring on 36 and Case retiring on 7.

Although West only lost a couple more wickets for the match, the runs were hard to come by.

Gentile managed to add another 13 to the score before retiring and F Skeer also retiring on 7.

A couple more wickets fell in the last few overs with Tilley taking a wicket and O’Loughlin being stumped on the last ball.

West fell short with 3/85, best with the bat were Prior and Gentile. Best with the ball for East were Tilley 1/3 and Pandey 1/4.
