Petition circulates against rehab site

Agroup of residents opposed to a proposed rehabilitation facility in Mount Gambier’s CBD is circulating a petition regarding the development.

The petition states that residents of Wehl Street “have serious concerns of a United Communities proposed 24/7 assisted residential rehab facility to be located at 11 Wehl Street South”.

“This location is close to Reidy Park Primary School, Saint Martin’s Kindergarten, the Rail Lands Precinct and backs onto a childcare centre,” the petition states.

“Residents of Wehl Street acknowledge the importance of supporting people who wish to break the cycle of addiction but do not believe that this location is suitable for the type of facility and the needs of those who will use it as it will not provide the level of privacy and dignity required for successful outcomes for the community and participants.

“There has been little consultation with the residents by United Communities or the Planning Department and insufficient consideration of the risks posed to the community by the planning assessment process.”

The petition organisers are urging the proposed redevelopment be rejected.
