Play upgrade

The proposed upgrade of a Millicent playground has prompted an elected member of Wattle Range Council to declare he acts on his socialist principles.

Councillor John Drew said he was taking a keen interest in the plans for Lions Park which were tabled at council’s September monthly meeting.

Lions Park was built in the 1960s when the South Australian Housing Trust established a residential development on a greenfield site.

Engineering services director Peter Halton said council had adopted a policy several years ago of concentrating resources from the town’s smaller playgrounds into the mega-playground at The Domain on North Terrace.

Cr Drew indicated that additional recreational facilities should be provided at the Lions Park.

“It is a long way away from The Domain,” Cr Drew said.

“I am looking after the people without cars. There are disadvantaged people living in the area around Lions Park. “I am a socialist.

The proposals include a meeting place, pump track, community garden and children’s play area.

The meeting endorsed staff recommendation the proposals go to formal public consultation.
