Players get to try hand at disc golf

Mount Gambier Disc Golf will hold its monthly league day this Sunday at the Crater Lakes course.

Players will contest 18 holes on the amateur layout, a general reprieve from the pro layout played during the Eruption event last month.

The event serves to foster club-based competition and gives not only members but also interested members of the public an opportunity to play or watch the sport.

The club has implemented a few changes to help continue to foster the growth of the sport locally by splitting juniors away from the overall handicap system and creating a new advanced competition to allow more experienced players to compete against players at a similar rating.

The club has experienced growth over the past few seasons and in turn has had to look at how to foster competition for more experienced players whilst not discouraging new players into the sport.

Registration details for the event can be found on the club’s Facebook page.

Registration numbers will be down this week, but for good reason, as eight players from Mount Gambier Disc Golf are representing the club at this week’s National Disc Golf Championships at Landsborough, Queensland.

The event, which has sold out at 192 players, take place over three days.

Local club representatives managed to secure their places in the tournament based on their rankings as limited places were available for each division.

Jessica and Austin Holman will both represent the club in the male and female junior divisions, with Jessica defending her title from last year.

Michelle Schulz and Nicole McPherson will compete in the Novice Women’s division with the latter in a good position to take the title after returning to the sport this year.

Kate Eldridge will face a tough battle in the intermediate division and hopefully her experience will be the deciding factor.

Ryan Nicholson, Hayden McPherson and Alex Costales will also be eager to put up a strong showing but each will face strong fields.

The MMA1 division in which McPherson is competing has 29 registered players.

The number of competitors travelling to the event is a credit to the skill level and commitment that local players have developed for the sport.

Sunday’s league day will start with registrations at 8.30am and play from 9am.

The round takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete and new players are encouraged to attend.
