Poet shares tough story

Poet shares tough story

Local author Jo-ann McKay will launch her poetry collection in Rise Little One, Rise tomorrow at the Mount Gambier Library at 7pm.

Written from an honest survivor’s perspective, Rise Little One, Rise, captures Ms McKay’s unique life and healing journey.

Her life suddenly changed when her mother died when she was three years old.

“After the death of my mother, I was given away, and after many years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, I became a ward of the state,” Ms McKay said.

“I was dealt some horrific life experiences, but I needed to heal.

My ambition was to publish a book about my journey through domestic violence and abuse, to find my true strong self.

“I chose the genre of poetry because it can say so much in such a small space.

“The theme throughout Rise Little One, Rise is not despair, but resilience, strength, courage, and the glowing light of hope.

“I hope that in sharing my writings, to encourage other survivors to tell their stories and a reminder to be kind to one another.

“A simple smile can have a positive impact and a ripple effect.”

The event is supported by The Haven Mount Gambier, a safety hub within the Mount Gambier Library, which provides information and referrals for at-risk women and children.

“Almost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner and on average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner,” The Haven Community Partner Vivienne Jaffer said.

“Knowledge is power, you never know who may need help and knowing who to contact locally may save someone’s life.”

Agency staff will be available with advice and guidance on the night, and books will be available for sale and signing for $10 (cash only).

To book your seat, contact the Mount Gambier Library on 8721 2540 or book online via the library’s website.
