Racer gears up for Eseries finale

Mount Gambier teenage racing sensation Jobe Stewart is gearing up for one last stint in the sim-racing hot seat tomorrow night.

The 16-year-old has been representing Erebus Motorsport in the highly-competitive Cash Converters Supercars Pro Eseries over the last five weeks.

He has battled door to door with the country’s top sim drivers on the iRacing platform on world famous racetracks from Mount Panorama to Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

After four of the five rounds Stewart sits 15th in the standings on 240 points, but is within striking distance of achieving his goal of a top-10 finish, while Walkinshaw Andretti pilot Dayne Warren has won all four sprint races.

Stewart said it had been a rough ride so far, but hoped to power clear from the bad luck and rise up the standings in tomorrow night’s season finale.

“The first three rounds did not go to plan with some crashes, but we qualified inside the top 10 and held position at Phillip Island which gives me confidence,” he said.

“The top four guys are out of reach, but from myself to eighth it is pretty close, so if I can have a good result in the top 10 we could climb up the championship.”

The Erebus Academy young gun started the season in WD-40 colours at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

Sadly things did not go Stewart’s way after a disappointing qualifying session forced him to start 17th before trouble arrived moments after the lights went out.

He made a decent start, but in the thick of an angry pack was taken out by Sam Blacklock which sent the #9 Holden ZB Commodore spinning into the gravel.

Stewart eventually recovered to finish 18th but admitted the pressure on the big stage got the better of him.

The blue paint was swapped for the black of Ozland Group, but the livery change did not improve the teenager’s fortunes when racing resumed at the notorious US Long Beach street circuit.

During the early stages things were looking promising for Stewart, who immediately flew up to seventh and was in the mix for a top-10 finish after the set of compulsory stops.

However, the penultimate lap produced a heartbreak for the Erebus Academy steerer when he had nowhere to go after Brady Meyes’ DJR Ford Mustang bounced off the wall and into the #9 Holden’s path.

After spinning 180 degrees and feeling the full force of the unforgiving street circuit, Stewart crossed the line a respectable 13th, while more experienced teammate Jarrad Filsell stepped onto the podium.

The series remained in North America for round 3, but unfortunately the racing gods continued to haunt the teenager.

Stewart stood out on the Road America course sporting the distinctive Pedders Suspension colours and showed some impressive pace.

After navigating through the chaos on the opening lap, the Erebus Motorsport car moved up four positions from his grid slot of 16th.

Stewart showed off his talent as one of the fastest cars on the track to fly into the top 10 during the closing stages.

However, a season-best finish disappeared on the last corner of the 10-lap race where a desperate lunge sent Tickford’s Richard Hamstead straight into the path of the Pedders car.

A third unlucky incident in as many events meant Stewart had to settle for 16th and he felt Road America was the race that got away.

“I was hoping to finish 10th or ninth, but heading into the last corner a guy on new tyres dived down the inside and ran me off the road,” Stewart said.

“It was pretty tough because heading into the final corner I thought ‘I have got this’ so to have three incidents in a row was very disappointing.”

Sporting a new and tough Erebus Garage livery, luck was finally on Stewart’s side when he kept out of trouble at Phillip Island.

After a thrilling qualifying session the young star put the #9 machine 10th on the grid with the big guns.

With the back of the pack shenanigans behind him, Stewart drove with confidence around the fast-sweeping Victorian circuit home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

After surviving a tight battle he crossed the line ninth to record his maiden top-10 finish of the season and score valuable championship points.

Stewart said his mental resilience made the uplifting performance possible.

“I just put my head down and changed my mentality,” he said.

“Qualifying in the top 10 gave me a decent start, so I just sent it and it worked.”

Stewart would have loved to continue his form in the 20-lap enduro at Mount Panorama which mixed the Pro and All Stars together.

The Mount Gambier junior’s co driver was Erebus Academy’s Super2 representative Jaylyn Robotham.

Racing against some of the biggest names in Australian motorsport, Stewart was keen to make an impression, but the race was effectively over before he jumped behind the wheel.

Robotham was sent flying into the air after tangling up with main-game Team18 star and former Mount Gambier resident Scott Pye at Skyline.

As the sister Boost Mobile Erebus Commodore won the thrilling race, Stewart recorded 21st for the youngest pairing in the field after being a lap down at one stage.

Yet another hard luck story leaves Stewart determined to finish a challenging season with a bang.

The Pro Series will wrap up at the Hungaroring, which holds a special place in Australian motorsport fans’ hearts after Daniel Ricciardo and Mark Webber snatched victories in the 2014 and 2010 Hungarian Formula 1 Grands Prix respectively.

It is one of the most twisty and technical layouts on the F1 calendar and Stewart said keeping his nose clean would be critical for a good result.

“Staying out of trouble will be the main thing,” he said.

“It is the newest track on iRacing and not many people have done laps there, but I like the track with chicanes and curbs to attack.

“If I can get another top 10 result that will be pretty good for the team.”
