Riders revved up towards Millicent Show event

The 144th Millicent Show is just over a week away and preparations at the Gordon Memorial Oval and environs are well under way.

As part of the preparations, the Mount Gambier Junior Motorcycle Club held a working bee at the Motocross Track on Saturday.

There was plenty of elbow grease applied to bring the dirt course fronting Mt Burr Road out of its winter hibernation.

After shovels, mowers etc had done their work, there were several test rides by youngsters who were keen to get a feel for the track.

It was dormant a year ago as COVID protocols prompted the cancellation of the 2020 Millicent Show.

The large numbers of riders trackside on Saturday showed their passion for two-wheeled racing has not dimmed.

The ever-popular Dale Teagle Memorial Motocross will be staged from mid-afternoon on day one on Friday, November 5 and it will last well into the night.

Further motocross action will take place on the following day.

Owing to COVID restrictions, it is unlikely the usual high number of Portland and Warrnambool riders will cross the border for the 2021 Millicent Show.

The Millicent Show Office is now staffed each week day until the show begins to accept entries and membership fees.

Dozens of volunteers donate hundreds of hours to make Millicent’s number one annual social occasion a success.

The Millicent Show is also a valuable money-spinner for local community groups.

Saturday’s working bee was not the only voluntary activity in Millicent as dozens of others provided their time over the weekend as umpires, scorers and caterers at the record-breaking annual Millicent Junior Basketball Tournament.
