Robe Council financial concern

AState Government agency has painted a bleak financial outlook for the Robe District Council.

The Essential Services Commission has found the seaside council’s short-term financial position potentially unsustainable.

It follows a period that included operating deficits with high spending on new capital initiatives.

As part of its 39-page report, the Essential Services Commission does note the Robe District Council has taken steps to move towards a more sustainable position in the medium to long-term.

“However, it cannot be considered financially sustainable in the medium to longer term at this point, due to risks arising from its forecast costs and asset management practices,” the Commission states.

“Historically, the Robe District Council has demonstrated effective cost constraint, but it has also failed to meet the ongoing renewal needs of its existing infrastructure base.

“This now presents a backlog of deferred renewal and rehabilitation it needs to address in the future.”
