Running festival laces up for a second year

After a successful first year, the Coonawarra Running Festival will race back into action again this November.

Registrations are open for the event, which will be held on Saturday, November 11 at Coonawarra Park and raises awareness and funds for Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

The event raised $27,000 for Breakthrough last year and all funds raised will be kept within the local community to provide resources and support local people.

Coonawarra Running Festival committee member Sandra Wallis said excitement was already building for the event, with lots of enquiries and interest on social media.

“We are very excited, we cannot wait, the year is coming around really quickly, and people are starting to register already,” she said.

“We have already got registrations from lots of different towns.

“It was so popular last year, and we had so much positive feedback and requests that people would like us to come back and do it again.

“Last year we had 320 registered runners, there were 35 market stalls, and over 50 entrants in the Show ‘n’ Shine, and we are thinking it will be bigger and better this year.”

The day will include a variety of running events for those keen to hit the track, including 1km, 5km, 10km and 21km running races.

The much-loved 6km Wobbly Winery Walk is returning for the less-serious participants and there will be plenty of racing action for the little ones with a fun kids’ race.

Coonawarra Park will be filled with a festive atmosphere, including music, food, local wines and cocktails, coffee, market stalls and vehicles which will be polished to perfection for the Show ‘n’ Shine.

The fun day also aims to decrease the stigma around mental health and mental health resources will be available.

The event also coincides with Remembrance Day, which will be acknowledged at 11am on the day.

Transport will be available at a minimal cost and people are encouraged to make a weekend of it by attending the big event on Saturday and exploring the region the following day.
