Sergeant to lead surf club

Millicent police sergeant Nick Patterson has been re-elected as the captain of the 250-strong Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club.

Sgt Patterson is no stranger to the waters of Rivoli Bay as he is past officer-in-charge of Beachport police.

Two of his colleagues at the Millicent police station are also involved with the seaside club.

Senior Sergeant First Class Rick Errington has recently completed the coveted Bronze Medallion lifesaving qualification.

Senior Constable Peter Phillips founded the club whilst stationed at Beachport seven years ago and has remained the president ever since.

The Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club has a busy January with training sessions and beach patrols, after going from strength to strength in the build up to the 2021-2022 season.

There was no winter recess for the committee, working hard in the background to ensure a seamless start to the season.

Fifteen club members trained hard to build up their capabilities and qualifications, with 10 members awarded the Bronze Medallion and five members were awarded the Surf Rescue Certificate.

“These 15 newly qualified members add to the 45 existing patrolling members,” a club spokeswoman said.

“This will allow the club to patrol the beaches safely in what is expected to be a busy summer ahead. In addition to that, our existing bronze medallion holders and IRB drivers and crews completed their yearly qualifications.”

The club is always looking for more volunteers to assist in multiple roles. Email beachportslssa@gmail.com if you would like more information on volunteering, joining or becoming a sponsor.
