Socks paired back with owner

The purr-fect miracle occurred when a cat was reunited with its owner after missing for more than a year.

The four-year-old cat, named Socks, was found on a private property with kittens and was caught and taken to Gambier Vets before being relocated to the South East Animal Welfare League (SEAWL).

SEAWL operations coordinator Marica Perkovic said Socks had always been an indoor cat who was not microchipped or desexed and had escaped from her home.

Ms Perkovic said the league did not encounter cases often where owners were reunited with un-microchipped pets after a significant period.

“The owner had seen a post on Facebook the person had cat-trapped a cat and it was going to Gambier Vets, so he had seen that on social media and by the time that had all happened the cat was then with us,” she said.

“Lucky for social media, he must have seen something, or someone had said to him ‘that looks like your old cat’.”

Ms Perkovic said the owner was very happy to be reunited with his fur baby and said it proved miracles could happen.

“He was just really lucky and the cat recognised him straight away apparently,” she said.

“They do go wild, because she has had one year and two months of freedom and she has become pregnant and had her first litter.

“She has got a bit of an abscess on her stomach but aside from that she was healthy.

“If you have lost your cat, put it on social media, alert the council, alert the vet, alert us, we can share on our page as long as we have got a photo.”

Socks was microchipped upon release and will be desexed and Ms Perkovic emphasised the importance of desexing and microchipping cats and dogs.

The Dog and Cat Management Act states all cats and dogs born after July 1, 2018, must be microchipped and desexed and the SEAWL microchips pets by appointment for $50.
