Softball season gets off to hard start

The weather was not kind for the season opening of the Mount Gambier Softball League, but its three games did not disappoint.

Wanderers and Demons started their game off strong, scoring four runs each in the first innings, with Demons pitcher Billie Jones getting two outs at the plate in the first.

The game was kept tight with another two runs from both teams in the second for a score of 6-all.

Demons’ Meg Merrett took a fast catch at first base for the last out in the third innings.

Demons had the last bat and faced Wanderers rising star Lily Clifford-Finch, pitching to catcher Charli Kaigg.

Demons finished strong with Steph Chant hitting out to centre field and making it to third base.

Demons coach Kezia Feast hit a home run, which scored another three runs and Demons took out the win with a final score of 15-8.

Sister teams Concordes White and Concordes United, both loaded with new players to the league, had an exciting game at Diamond One.

Allana Feast took to the mound for United for first time in five years, which saw her walk away with five K2s at the plate.

White started the innings with five safe hits, with Carly Pearson showing her skill with the bat and securing five K2s for the game.

Both teams batted strong with all new players adding runs to their team’s score.

Rebecca White from United, already in mid season form, hit a rocket ball down centre field securing herself a home run.

First year player Keely Lunsmann, for White, secured herself three catches at second base.

United were strong in the field and managed a double and triple play.

Both teams played well but United came away with the win with a final score of 10-5.

The league also welcomed new team Millicent Bandits to the diamond this weekend who managed to score their first win against Warriors in a 11-10 match, led by their coach Chantelle MacDonald.

Bandits’ Natalie Whitehead at third base and Molly Cushion at centre field both took great catches in the game.

Maddie R’s bat to centre field got her all the way to 3rd base.

Warriors newbie Carolyn Dwyer scored three safe hits for her team, while teammate Teresa Hatch pitched two strong innings with three K2s at the plate.

The third innings saw Warriors favourites Leyna Bruggemann (coach) and Angela Queale take the field trying to close the two run lead from Bandits.

Bandits were eager to prove themselves and came away with the one run win.
