‘Sound turnout’ expected for radio station meeting

Abig turn-out is expected by the organisers of a meeting in Millicent this week to discuss the future of the local community radio station 5THE-FM.

Group spokesman David Walshaw said he had received positive feedback since the open forum was announced over a fortnight ago.

It will be held at 7pm on Thursday at St Alphonsus Hall.

According to Mr Walshaw, the lawyers advising his group had indicated that it was their view that it had met all legal and constitutional requirements to call a special general meeting of 5THE-FM.

“We have tried for almost six months to hold such a meeting,” Mr Walshaw said.

“Our community group is aware that people are concerned with the reduction in local broadcasting at 5THE-FM.

“Our attempts to engage with the station have proved fruitless.

“We have even secured former Wattle Range Mayor and ex-5THE-FM chairman Mark Braes to act as a mediator with the station but this offer was declined by the 5THE-FM board of management.”

Mr Walshaw said the broadcasting licence extension for 5THE-FM expired in just over a month.

“Our group is proceeding with Thursday’s meeting as 15 members of 5THE-FM have petitioned for a special general meeting,” he said.

“One of the agenda items is to elect a new board of management.

“I have already received many expressions of interest from local people who want to serve on the board or in on-air and support roles.

“We are all keen to see extensive local broadcasting return to Millicent and district.

“Members of the public are welcome on Thursday night.”

The SE Voice has approached 5THE-FM for comment.
