Sporting group future in balance

Two long-established Millicent district sporting organisations are at the crossroads.

The Millicent Youth Centre has called a Special General Meeting for March 26 to elect a Secretary/Treasurer.

If such an appointment cannot be made, it is likely the Millicent Youth Centre will go into recess.

Its main function is to manage the large halls in the Millicent Showgrounds.

They are the base of the Millicent Gymnastics Club and are also used each November for the annual Millicent Show.

The Millicent and Mount Burr badminton clubs also regularly used the halls but competition ceased several years ago.

Meanwhile, the future of the Hatherleigh golf club is on the agenda of the Hatherleigh Sport and Recreation Centre annual general meeting on March 24.

The nine-hole, par three, public course in a bushland setting was built with the assistance of government grants in the 1970s.

Although its fairways and greens are highly regarded, it has faced rising costs and declining patronage for many years.

The HSRC also has oversight of the Hatherleigh Oval, netball courts, licensed clubrooms and associated infrastructure.
