Stewart sets eyes on prize

Blue Lake city racing sensation Jobe Stewart has claimed runner up round honours in the Dunlop Super3 Series at the Supercars Bathurst 1000 over the weekend.

Third generation racer Cameron McLeod took out the top place with the podium rounded out by Mason Kelly.

Both races and qualifiers set the pace for the weekend with all of them following the same leaderboard as the finishing podium.

Stewart said while the races were “pretty standard”, there were some collisions with the Super2 cars on the track he and his fellow drivers had to avoid.

“For me I suppose and Cameron McLeod, there were a few incidents in Super2 which happened around us which we had to stay out of trouble, but apart from that it was a pretty standard race from my side of things,” he said.

“There was one at the start of race one which I had to avoid and then race two there was a few cars that stalled on the race start … but after those incidents at the start of both races it was pretty much smooth from there.”

Stewart now heads into the final round of the Dunlop Super3 Series championship at the VAILO Adelaide 500 in November nearly 200 points ahead of second place sitter Jett Johnson with McLeod wrapping up the top three.

“I will definitely try and win, winning is going to be the main goal and because I have got that little buffer in the championship now I think I will just go out there and give it all I have got,” he said.

“It definitely gives me a bit of confidence and it is kind of mine to lose I guess you could say, so it puts a bit more pressure on but also it’s a lot better to be in the position I am.

“I will just do the same thing I have done every round pretty much, just go into practice and just build up to it myself.

“I’ll just go in there and try and qualify as fast as I can and then just do my thing in the races that I have always been doing, just try and improve myself, (but) try to win it at the same time if I can.

“It’s more just about trying to focus on the weekend and not really focus on the championship, just keep that in the back of my mind and just focus on the driving.

“You cannot really go in expecting too much but also you can just go in wanting to win which is what everyone on the track wants to do.”

Despite Johnson being closer to Stewart’s championship lead points wise, the Image Racing driver said his biggest competition will be on-track rival McLeod.

“Jett is not too bad, he has been pretty fast at some races but McLeod I think will be faster at Adelaide,” Stewart said.

“He’s definitely going to be the biggest competition, he won both races here and he’s been pretty fast so I think he’ll still be pretty fast going into Adelaide.

“We have been pretty close this year and he’s made a benchmark for me, to come out on top against him will be a pretty good feeling.”

Stewart said he was excited for his inaugural performance at the Adelaide street circuit in his home state.

“I have been there the last five or six years just to watch because it’s obviously one of the closest races for us in Mount Gambier,” he said.

“I have been there to watch plenty of times, but I have never actually raced which is going to be pretty cool to finally race there.

“It’s always a track that I have loved watching at because it’s a street circuit and with the walls and the curves and stuff I think that suits my driving style a little bit, so I think it will be a good track for me.”

The Mount Gambier racer said to take home the Super3 championship would feel like all the hard work this season has paid off.

“To do it in my first year would be pretty cool as well, I know everyone I am racing against is pretty much rookies too, but still to do it in my first year as technically a rookie in the category would put me in a pretty good spot going into next year,” he said.

“I will try and stay with Image Racing if I can and hopefully step it up to Super2 next year. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but that’s the plan for sure.

“Hopefully I can win the championship and a win at Adelaide would be the best way to do it.”
