Students roar for Mad Minute event

The Lions Club of Penola held it’s annual ‘Mad Minute’ competition recently with students from Mary MacKillop Memorial, Penola and Nangwarry primary schools participating.

The competition has been running for some 11 years starting with a small group of three schools in Mount Gambier and it now involves 34 schools in the Upper and Lower South East.

Co-ordinator Mike Matuschka said the students this year showed a lot of enthusiasm.

“It is always interesting to see the kids develop their responses to the questions,” he said.

“Some stick to the bare bones, others expand and include humour and drama, and others fine that one minute is not enough time to get their point of view across.”

The program is aimed at Year 5 students, however all who took part received a certificate of participation.

This year there were three Year 5 and three Year 6 students from Nangwarry, 19 Year 4 and 27 Year 5 students from Penola Primary School and 10 Year 4 and 17 Year 5 students from Mary MacKillop school.

Penola Lions Club members Mr Matuschka, Jeff Hoare, Bruce Robertson, Jenny Hinze, Shane McPherson, Bronte Cox and Victoria Marshall assisted on the day.

Mr Matuschka also thanked the teachers from the three schools who helped out with the students.
