Teachers raise hand for better pay deal

Limestone Coast teachers will join colleagues from throughout South Australia today in strike action after rejecting the State Government’s latest pay offer.

Public schools throughout the region will be closed while the teachers undertake a full day of industrial action, which was endorsed by the Australian Education Union Executive on Monday evening.

On Tuesday local schools started notifying parents they would be closed today due to insufficient staff on duty to ensure “adequate standards of student safety and welfare”.

Year 12 exams are expected to proceed despite the strike. AEU Branch President Andrew Gohl said it was a disappointing position to be in, but the executive could not accept the offer received.

Today’s strike followed a state-wide ballot for industrial action last week which saw 83% of union members vote in favour of a full day strike, up from 80% in September.
