Teen recognised as shining star

Mount Gambier teenager Rachael Kelly (pictured) has been formally recognised as a shining star of Australia’s skills sector after being named a finalist at the 2021 Australian Training Awards.

The Australian Training Awards shine a spotlight on outstanding individuals, businesses and registered training organisations who demonstrate best practice and innovation in the nation’s Vocational Education Training (VET) sector.

The Grant High School Year 12 student has been nominated as a finalist for the Australian School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award.

She is simultaneously undertaking a 12-month Certificate III in Business traineeship with Key 2 Sale.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the annual awards were an opportunity for the community to celebrate the skills, commitment and professionalism of Australia’s vibrant VET sector.

“As high school captain, Rachael actively supports change through increasing opportunities for students to ensure their voice is heard,” he said.

“The vision for a student-led development team evolved out of her merit winning Year 12 research project, a legacy she hopes will demonstrate the power students hold when their leadership skills are encouraged.

“Thank you Rachael for the contribution you are making in both your school and business community, we are so proud of your achievements.”

The awards, which will be a virtual event on November 18, will see state and territory award winners compete for the national title.
