Mount Gambier athlete David Chant has raised more than $13,000 cycling 1500km from Geelong to Canberra in nine days as part of the Tour De Cure Signature Tour.

Around 100 riders took part in the event, fundraising $12,000 to attend which goes towards cancer research.

Since its inception in 2007 Tour De Cure has raised $75m, funded 563 cancer projects and contributed to 70 scientific cancer breakthroughs.

Mr Chant decided to join the movement after seeing “all the amazing things participants were doing” and their inspiring stories on Channel 7’s Sunrise program.

“I do not need to wait until someone close to me dies of cancer to take action so I thought I would raise some money for this important cause,” he said.

Mr Chant has participated in 49 athletic races and about a dozen marathons including one in New York.

Mr Chant said while the tour was not as challenging day by day as other events, the accumulation of fatigue over the journey mentally and physically was quite demanding.

Anyone who wants to support Mr Chant can still do so by donating on the Tour De Cure website.
