Tradies set to swing golf clubs instead of hammers for charity

Over 40 teams of tradies will tee off tomorrow at the Blue Lake Golf Club for the Construction Industry Ambrose Golf Day, sponsored by MG Plasterers and Steeline Roofing.

The event will be raising money for the Mount Gambier Support Group of the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

It is back and bigger than ever after the inaugural success of the day in 2021, now attracting players from as far as Adelaide.

There will be prizes for ‘Longest Drive’ and ‘Closest to the Pin’, a betting hole, silent auction of AFL memorabilia, special guests and catering by The Ok Pie Shop.

Steeline Roofing account manager Malcolm Lockwood said the reason MG Plasterers and Steeline Roofing had teamed up to run the day was because they were both keen supporters of local sports and charities.

“It’s all about fun and it’s an opportunity for MG Plasterers and Steeline Roofing to give something back to the community,” he said.

“All these guys are actually builders, plumbers, electricians, we’re not saying they have to be anything in particular but basically the tradies.

“It’s based on a day of fun, supporting a very important local charity and basically getting together.”

The teams will tee off at 1pm commencing 18 holes of Ambrose golf which Lockwood described as ‘the legal way to cheat in golf’.

“Four hit off, they choose which ball they want to pick at each hole,” he said.

“When it comes to skill level they’ll be some really good golfers, but it’s handicapped.”

The winners of last year’s event were Dewain Barret, Keiran Ashby, David Somerfield and Marc Dalton with a Nett score of 53 6/8.

MG Plasterers director Mardi Patzel said the event did not go ahead last year due to COVID protocols.

“We are really lucky in the construction industry that it never really damaged us because we did not really have to stop but we have all been so busy so it’s a good thing for the tradies to have a day, a break, they can all meet socially, raise funds for a good cause and have a good time,” she said.

“It’s a day of socialising and just raising funds for Royal Flying Doctors.”
