Uncertainty surrounds cricket season future

Avital meeting of club delegates will be held at the conclusion of the ninth round of the new Millicent Naracoorte Cricket Association on Saturday.

The forum is likely to be held at Penola and will determine the remaining draw for the inaugural 2021/22 season.

The original draw had another four minor rounds to play.

However, the COVID virus is seriously impacting on player availability in a number of clubs and there is support for bringing the season to an early end by reducing the number of home-and-away fixtures.

After Saturday’s round is finished, all nine teams would have played each other once.

Looking to round nine, the Millicent Black Hats have their first match since early-December and will be hosting Robe.

The seasiders struggled without key players Jordan Pettit and Zack Deane in round eight.

The team was bolstered by the presence of express bowler and ex-Kingston player Jack Armfield who nowadays lives in Adelaide.

It will be the last time the main oval at McLaughlin Park will be used this season as the concrete wicket will be covered to allow AFLW matches to be played.

There will also be action on the adjoining Norm Facey Oval when Millicent Footballers host Naracoorte Townies.

Home team skipper Sam Kent is leading well in his first season in the role.

Lucindale travels to Wortley Oval at Naracoorte to meet the Warriors.

The match of-the-day has undefeated ladder leader Rendelsham head to the home ground of second-placed Mount Burr.

Rendelsham will be boosted by the return of star recruit Jacob Carger and new skipper Jake Wight.

Meanwhile, the prestigious Smith-Walker Trophy was also due to be contested at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr on Saturday.

The Millicent and District Cricket Association and the Mt Burr and Rendelsham cricket clubs instituted the annual trophy several years ago in memory of two late cricketers: Alan Crawford, “Mick” Walker and Ian “Rocky” Smith.

A twilight 20/20 match was due to follow the regular game comprising of retired cricketers over 40 years of age who have played for their respective clubs

However, officials from bah clubs have conceded that COVID has reduced the availability of older players and so the 2022 match has been cancelled.

It will now be held at Mount Burr next season.
