West Gambier v South Gambier

West Gambier completed an impressive victory over South Gambier at Malseed Park on Saturday.

After bowling South Gambier all out for 114 and then scoring 5/296, West had the Demons one wicket down at the start of play on day two.

Sam Bradbrook and Jakob Opie got South Gambier off to a good start with an excellent partnership.

Unfortunately West Gambier found a breakthrough with Shane De Jong getting Opie caught behind on 33.

Bradbrook continued on finding consistent runs.

Sujith Nikethana made some important contributions for West Gambier, taking three middle order wickets.

Robert Drenthen, Jaggar Geary and Hanish Jalota all fell to Nikethana for small scores, with none of the three passing 10.

West Gambier’s captain Bray Stephenson made the important breakthrough of Sam Bradbrook on 73, with Stephenson trapping him LBW.

Adam Kuhl provided some hope for South Gambier as he got a start in his innings and making his way to 21, but the West Gambier bowling attack was relentless and struck at the right moment with Justin De Jong bowling Kuhl.

Axel Page was Nikethana’s fourth victim for the day, as Page failed to get a run on the board before he was bowled.

Noah Maxwell only managed to score four runs before he too was dismissed, with Maxwell trapped on the crease with Jack Geddes catching him LBW.

Stephenson took the final wicket of the match, sealing the game for West Gambier.

With Jed Sims only scoring four and Adam Vause remaining not out on 0 South finished all out for 175.

West Gambier claimed the victory by an innings and seven runs, narrowly avoiding having to bat a second time.

Sujith Nikethana was the pick of the bowlers for West Gambier in the second innings with an incredible 4/5.

Bray Stephenson and Justin De Jong were standouts over the two days with bat and ball, De Jong in particular with an impressive first innings century.

West Gambier now sits comfortably atop the ladder with two rounds to go until finals while South Gambier remains out of finals contention at fifth.
Mil Lel v North Sportsman’s

North Sportsman’s has secured another victory for the season with an impressive performance with bat and ball against Mil Lel in round 8.

After North Sportsman’s scored big on day one at Frew Park Mil Lel had a big run chase ahead of it going into day two.

With 314 runs on the board North had plenty to defend but Mil Lel had 80 overs to chase it.

Ty Dinnison and Nick Walters got Mil Lel off to a solid start on a tough day.

Declan Kenny was the first wicket taker for North with Dinnison caught on 12.

William Rowland joined Walters at the crease and the pair piled on the runs for Mil Lel.

Rowland was well on his way to a 50 when Mathew Robinson got him caught behind on 34.

Walters quickly lost another batting partner with Darcy Williamson caught on two.

Jack Miller got himself to 31 when Kenny picked up his second wicket of the day, beating the bat and taking out Miller’s stumps.

Kenny found himself on a hattrick after catching Archer Virtanen LBW first ball.

At 5/129 Mil Lel was desperate for a batsman to form a partnership with Walters who was slowly building his innings.

Bachmann was unable to stick around with Walters for an extended period of time with Isaac Mulraney bowling him for 10.

Mulraney then picked up a second wicket with Toby Grigg caught on four.

Craig Lock and Mitchell Little both failed to get off the mark before being dismissed.

Craig Hicks was the final wicket to fall in the 79th over.

Kenny figures finished 4/27 with the addition of the wicket of Hicks.

Mil Lel was bowled all out for 165, falling 149 runs short of North Sportsman’s total.

The loss sees Mil Lel drop to fourth with North closing in on West Gambier on top of the ladder.
East Gambier v Penola

East Gambier secured an outright Barber Shield victory over Penola at Allan Scott Park on Saturday as the side backed up a dominant first day with a ruthless final day.

After being sent in, Penola was bowled out for 31 on day one.

In reply East Gambier made 92 and took four wickets from Penola before the end of the day’s play, with Marc Roberts doing most of the damage with the ball in the second innings.

Penola required a miracle to escape and claim a win after restarting at 4/19, the Eagles needed 42 runs to send East Gambier back in with the bat.

But it was not to be as Jake Schulz failed to add to his overnight total with Alex Hentschke taking the first wicket of the day.

Lewis March only added three runs before Hentschke took a second wicket of the day trapping March LBW.

Hentschke continued to rip through the Penola batting order with Tom Clayfield caught for a five-ball duck.

Penola showed little fight at 7/23 and Liam Turley added to the visitors’ pain bowling Joshua Doyle for three.

Marc Roberts was brought into the attack and had an instant impact taking the wicket of Zac Zema for one.

Ned Skeer could only add the one run with Ben Hentschke taking his first wicket of the innings to seal the match for East Gambier.

East Gambier claimed the win with an innings and 29 runs, Alex Hentschke was impressive with the ball taking a remarkable 8/11, while Marc Roberts was the hero in the second innings taking 4/12.

Penola remains winless as East Gambier hopes to use its dominant win to gain some momentum with finals approaching.
