Women swing into Christmas break

Fifty-seven women competed in a four person ambrose at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, incorporating Christmas break-up celebrations.

The weather was great for golfing and the day commenced with a glass of bubbly or orange juice to get the ladies in the festive mood and on their way.

It was a shotgun start with non-golfers and golfers playing together and the scoring for the day was very good.

The winning combination of Sue Szopory, Jill Johnson, Heather Teakle and Janina Morrison took out the honours.

The team had two birdies on the 1st and 9th holes, with a blemish of a bogey on the 7th par 5 hole, carding a 35 off the stick, on a handicap of 7.2 = 27.8.

In second place were the ladies from the Bay Carol Smith, Maureen Howe, Chris Galpin and Pauline Paterson with 37 off the stick, a birdie on the 9th hole, one blemish of six on the 7th hole – handicap 7.2 = 29.3.

The speciality prizes included the nearest to the rope, claimed by golfer Di O’Donnell and non-golfer Janine Duke.

Second shot onto the par 3, 6th hole went to Libby Altschwager and Team McIntyre both with birdies.

Pro Shot on the par 3, 8th hole winnng four balls were Julie Hanel and non-golfer Beth Mahoney.

Nearest the centre marker was Di O’Donnell and non-golfer Kerry McDonnell.

The long putting contest went to Lorraine Bruhn with an unbeatable shot of holing the putt.

The Olympic Trophy was presented by sponsor Lorraine Bruhn to a very happy winner Betty McKechnie.

Di O’Donnell received the Handicap Match – Play Championship Cup from sponsor Ann Schrapel.

Approximately 70 ladies then enjoyed a wonderful sit-down meal created by Gail Watson and her volunteer helpers, while a fashion parade from Redgum Country was held by Wendy Richardson, making use of eight local golfing
models.

An amusing skit was also presented, which concluded the Christmas celebrations.
