Younger memories shared

There was again a strong response at the South East Family History Group Research Centre in Millicent when locals recently gathered to recall memories from their younger days.

The topic was entertainment, sport and other pastimes.

Merle Stevens remembered playing basketball with the Millicent High School Old Scholars.

“Back in those days, this was the name given to the sport which we now call netball,” she said.

For Esther Scudds, dancing was a passion and she would go to the regular dances at the Nangula, Tantanoola and Rendelsham halls.

Another to recall her sporting days was Margaret Johnson.

“I played hockey with West Gambier and the venue was where Mount Gambier High School now stands,” she said.

THE SEFHG holds its regular monthly meetings at night but the afternoon forums were at a daylight time which encouraged the participation of those aged in their 80s and 90s.

It has hosted three such open forums with more than 100 participants in total.

They will resume with other topics in 2024.
