Ball rolling to bring top level state soccer to Mount Gambier

Ball rolling to bring top level state soccer to Mount Gambier

In a regional first, an A-League women’s soccer event could “potentially” be hosted in Mount Gambier this coming December.

On the back of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Mount Gambier has the opportunity to host Adelaide United and Western United.

At Monday night’s Grant District Council meeting Gambier Centrals Soccer Club president Shane Dycer presented a proposal that is currently in the pipeline to being approved.

Mr Dycer has been in discussion with Football Federation South Australia (FFSA) and Adelaide United to host the A-League match at Centrals’ home ground on December 16.

The match would be televised and it could draw in a crowd of more than 3000 spectators.

During his presentation Mr Dycer said he was hopeful for official approval this week.

Meanwhile, if the event goes ahead Grant council has committed to support with sponsorship of $5000 cash and $5000 in-kind support.

A slideshow presentation formed part of Mr Dycer’s deputation which showed the initial total financial cost was estimated at around $99,500.

However, this has already increased to around $117,000.

Mr Dycer said the State Government funding of $70,000 has been allocated as well as contribution from Limestone Coast Soccer Association of between $10,000 to $12,000.

Some of the costs will also be recouped with admission fees.

Under 16 years of age admission will be free while adult entry would be charged at $15 per person.

“Not an expensive day out to see a game like this”

School visits, a free clinic for children aged 5 to 16 years old and viewing the A-League squads training session plus a second clinic for local league players have also been proposed.

“We have put forward an expression of interest.

Mr Dycer said a confidential presentation was given to Adelaide United and A-League back in July.

The same presentation showcasing the potential for a women’s football event in Mount Gambier was presented at the council meeting.

“The slideshow gives an event overview of what we would like to achieve,” Mr Dycer said.

Initially proposed for December 9, Mr Dycer said has been pushed back to the start of the school holidays on December 16.

The extended stay could see the team in the region for four days, spending their time immersed in all things soccer including skills clinics for school aged students and young local league players.

“It’s a bit better selling point,” he said.

The live telecast game is an opportunity to showcase Mount Gambier, with Mr Dycer adding that if successful the event may return with not only the women’s league, but the men’s A-League as well.

“All going well we could have a women’s game and men’s game in two years’ time,”

Official approval is anticipated by the end of this week.

“We had to keep it quiet because it was not ticked off. It’s just about over the line. Hopefully fully approved by end of the week.”

“It’s been a big undertaking. We hope the community will get around it. The girl’s game is growing so much. It’s a great opportunity.”
