‘Charged up’

No cost options for installing Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at entrance points or other strategically located sites will be explored by Grant District Council.

At the request of elected member Megan Dukalskis, council resolved to explore the options in line with its Strategic Plan 2020-2030.

Although Cr Dukalskis was an apology from attending at council’s August monthly meeting her request was tabled in the agenda as a notice of motion.

“Other Councils have put out Expression of Interest documents for no cost installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and have received replies from companies such as JOLT and EVIE,” Cr Dukalskis said.

“Tesla is also seeking other areas where they can put up a supercharger station similar to that at Tailem Bend which accommodates six charging stations in the one area.”

According to Cr Dukalskis, the Mount Gambier airport, Tarpeena, Port MacDonnell and the saleyards represent areas where council land could be used under a land management agreement.

“Kelledy Jones have prepared these documents for other councils and leases have been for up to 15 years,” she said.

“Under some agreements the council receives income back after five years.

“I note the RAA was also talking about the establishment of these in the region and was also looking to fulfil targets with more sites.”

Cr Rodney Virgo moved the motion while Cr Brad Mann seconded in support of electric vehicles.

“I think it’s a great idea the fact electric vehicles are the way of the future. Working to get cars doing 1000km with a short charge. It will be fascinating to see how that comes along,” Cr Mann said.
