Data revealed by RAA shows electric vehicle (EV) sales in SA more than doubled in the last 12 months, with some suburbs recording a more than 400% increase in registered Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).
Data for the City of Mount Gambier and Grant District Council postcodes show the number of cars remained steady at about 32,235 vehicles.
According to data released by RAA’s federal counterpart, the Australian Automobile Association’s (AAA) EV Index shows BEVs now account for 7% of new car sales in South Australia.
There was a 116% increase in the number of BEVs registered in SA as of January 31, 2023, compared to 12 months prior – with 3284 BEVs on SA roads.
For the first time RAA can reveal the South Australian suburbs and towns with the highest uptake of BEVs with Nuriootpa, Seppeltsfield, Klemzig and Windsor Gardens topping the list.
Impressively, 15 South Australian suburbs and towns recorded an increase of more than 200% in new BEV sales.
RAA Mobility Technology Specialist Mark Borlace said growth in EV sales was accelerating and showing no signs of slowing down.
“This data tells us EV sales are now doubling year on year,” Mr Borlace said.
“While there’s still a relatively small number of BEVs on SA roads, this strong uptake indicates a growing appetite for low emissions vehicles.”
Mr Borlace said new EV models were being launched each month by trusted brands, making prices more competitive for consumers.
“South Australians can purchase an EV for as low as $38,890, with the BYD Dolphin model proving to be an affordable option for families and households,” Mr Borlace said.
“Other affordable models include the GWM Ora, MG’s MG4, and the BYD Atto 3, all starting below $48,000.
“Statewide charging infrastructure is also starting to come online to alleviate the greatest barrier to EV uptake – range anxiety.
“The RAA Charge network began rolling out earlier this year as South Australia’s first border-to-border EV charging network.
“The network is now nearing 50% completion and is on track to be finished next year.”
The RAA Charge network is being delivered with the assistance of a $12.35m grant from the State Government.
