Gardens in full bloom

Three Penola gardens will be opened early next month as part of Open Gardens SA’s Spring program.

Nancy’s Garden, owned by Nancy Mattner will open at 12 Miamba Street, Geoff and Jill Eckerman’s Weirs Lane Garden at 77 Weirs Lane and the Kidman Garden, owned by Suzie and Sid Kidman at 16 Hetherington Ave will all open as part of the program.

Ms Mattner’s garden creates exquisite fine needlework often featuring flowers, foliage and birds found in the garden and there will be a display of her beautiful work.

Highlights include a rambling country garden in the town featuring old red gums and roses.

As part of the Open Day, tea, coffee and cake served on the patio by CWA volunteers.

There will also be plant sales.

The Eckermans have an established wrap around, large country garden featuring a substantial rose collection.

They are keen recyclers and have used pre-loved materials to add individuality and personality to the garden – old pots have been re-used, cast iron troughs have been re-purposed and filled with plants and discarded timbers used to create structures and supports for climbing roses.

Ms Eckerman is a talented artist and her studio will be open to show an exhibition of her work.

Manning Sculptures will have small and large iron work sculpture on display and Wagner’s Roses will have a variety of roses for sale.

There will also be a coffee van for refreshments.

The Kidman Garden is compact, colourful and crammed with flowers, full of roses as well as interesting plants and perennials.

Ms Kidman also creates superb needlework cushions and bags and her work will be on display with some pieces for sale.

There will be a light lunch as part of the open days.

The gardens will open from 10am until 4.30pm on November 11 and 12, with entry $10 each or $25 for all three.

Children under 18 will be free and an $8 concession is available to Open Gardens SA members and Commonwealth Government Concession Card holders.

Funds raised at the open days will go to support the CWA.
