Former Millicent resident and Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna cultural leader Major (“Uncle Moogy”) Sumner led the “Mourning in the morning” at Elder Park in Adelaide on Australia Day on Friday.

Her Excellency the Governor of South Australia the Honourable Frances Adamson is patron in chief of the Australia Day Council of South Australia and she attended the smoking ceremony conducted by Mr Sumner.

Later in the day, hundreds of people attended a Survival Day rally in Victoria Square in the capital city.

The rally also heard about political issues impacting Indigenous South Australians, including the Riverlea housing development where 29 sets of indigenous remains have so far been unearthed.

Another speaker encouraged those who are eligible to vote in the coming months in the inaugural SA First Nations Voice to Parliament elections.
