Artists’ talent on show in city

An extremely detailed ink on scroll drawing from St Martins Lutheran College Year 12 student Angas Patterson has been selected for the 2024 SACE Art Show in Adelaide’s Square Light Gallery.

Angas’ piece, ‘The Culture Conurbation’, is one of just 129 artworks from across state to appear in the exhibition, opening March 19 and closing April 12.

The artworks including paintings, drawings, sculptures, costumes and multimedia works showcase some of the amazing students who completed SACE Art Visual and Design in 2023.

It was a busy year for Angas, who also won ‘best in show’ at last year’s St Martins Art Show, alongside best drawing.

He completed the drawing for his Year 12 Visual Arts portfolio, which he completed in Year 11.

Alongside two final pieces, Angas had to provide 40 pages of research and sketches.

Angas said the artwork’s title reflects the buildings from different cultures depicted, including Indian onion domes, Turkish mosques, Italian churches, English and Japanese architecture, spires and clocktowers.

“I had some founding shapes. I did a smaller sketch and then ruled out some larger shapes and filled it up as I went along,” Angas said.

“If you look closer, it’s just squares and triangles and cross-hatching the lines … I really like there’s lots of hidden Easter eggs in it. One of the clocktowers is on fire, it’s on the top-left side of the drawing. There’s a church in Florence that’s drawn on its side. No one notices it unless they tilt their head.

“It took a long time, there were months of lessons and sketching. I could not give you a number of hours.”

Angas is excited to have his artwork shown to new audiences in Adelaide.

“Especially since I did not know it was nominated. It’s a pleasant surprise,” Angas said.
