Holiday brings out big field

Last Thursday’s public holiday and warmer weather saw a bumper field of 144 players for the regular Thursday stableford round.

Joe Clements’ round of 40 points was enough to win by one from Dennis Smith, Brad Von Duve and Dane Handreck tied on 39.

Clements, playing off a four handicap, had five bogeys and five birdies to record a square with the card 72 off the stick.

The ball rundown extended to 34 points with John Gosling taking the last, while nearest the pins belonged to Bryan Walsh on the 8th and Jack Jennings on the 16th.

Saturday’s excellent golfing weather saw another field of just less than 100 players with the majority off early due to the AFL grand final.

Peter Jones and BLGC member Mathew McIntyre both posted 40 points to top C grade with Jones taking the win on count back.

Archy Arch, Andrew Stark and club captain Peter Waters all had excellent rounds posting 39 points in A grade with Arch taking first place by count back from Stark and Waters in third.

In B grade Chris Gabriel took first place on 37 points from Jacob Reed on 36 points.

The ball rundown went all the way to 32 points with Ian Ewart grabbing the last.

Archy Arch added nearest the pin on the 8th to his A grade win while on the 16th no one knocked it closer than Mike Griffiths, with both players rolling their putts in for birdies.

The Matchplay final was played on Sunday between Ian Ewart and Tim Kenny.

Excellent weather greeted the players and both Peter Waters and championship sponsor John Martin were on hand to send the players off at 8am.

The match was tight early on with wins to both players and a series of halved holes before Ewart opened a 3 up lead by the 12 tee.

A series of pars saw Kenny draw back to all square by the 16th tee and players remained so on the 18th tee.

A win to Ewart on the last saw him take the championship 1 up.
