Ladies strike up strong competition

The Mount Gambier Golf Club last week hosted its first game of the season, with 45 ladies competing on a fine golfing day.

Traditionally the first round of the Summer Cup, generously sponsored by life member Isobel Phillips, is played in the format of a stroke round.

Heather Barry claimed the honours in Division 1 (92-21-71 nett) with Heather’s split being 48 off the stick on the front nine and 44 off the stick on the back nine for 92.

Heather’s back nine was played in 44 strokes and parring the 17th and 18th holes allowed her to take out first position.

Faye Mainwaring was only one shot behind in second place (83-11-72 nett).

Faye had a great front nine with 40 off the stick, which included six pars, plus another three pars on the back nine.

Faye showed great consistency throughout her round.

Maxine McGregor won division two with the best score of the day (103-34-69 nett).

Maxine played a very consistent game having 50 strokes on the front nine and 53 strokes on the back nine for 103 off the stick.

The two par fives were good to her, parring the 7th and 17th holes.

Sue Ryan finished second in Division 2 (106-32-74 nett).

Sue’s split for the day was 54/52 for 106.

Ten balls were given out to players with the next best scores, commencing with Heather Teakle nett 73 down to Marie Douglas nett 76.

The speciality prizes went to Jeannette Braun for her shot on the 8th par three hole earning herself three balls.

A Grade second shot on the par five first tee went to Janina Morrison with two almighty shots just being 10 yards off the green.

The B Grade winner was Helen Heaver and C Grade winner Jill Johnson.

Six ladies opted to play a stableford competition and the winner was Lorraine Bruhn with a very nice score of 39 points.

Lorraine had 22 points on the front nine.

LADIES SATURDAY RESULTS – STROKE ROUND

In quite warm conditions, 20 ladies competed in last Saturday’s stroke round at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

Marie Douglas won the day on a countback, playing to her handicap (96-23-73 nett).

Marie played very consistent golf with her split for the nines being 48/48 and included three pars.

In second place, and unlucky to lose the countback, was Penne Saffin (93-20-73 nett).

Penne’s split for the nines was 46/47 including six pars, unfortunately, the third and 15th holes did not score well for Penne.

The ball rundown went from Jan Shanahan nett 74 down to Lyn Hudson nett 79.

Pro shot went to Jan Shanahan and the nearest the pin on the par three 16th hole was won by Janina Morrison.
