Millicent High School student Year 12 student Tayla Rowe received the prestigious W.S. DeGaris Memorial Cup at the school’s annual presentation ceremony on Tuesday night at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre.

The award recognised her exceptional academic achievement throughout 2023.

Tayla also won three other prizes: Humanities and Languages, ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award and Best All-rounder.

The 18-year-old was one of the MHS school captains in 2023 and is the daughter of Kristie and Josh Rowe of Millicent.

Among the past distinguished recipients of the DeGaris Cup are Professor Greg Barton and Dr Tim Bleby.

The DeGaris Cup was first presented in 1954 by Ralph and Bertha DeGaris (both now deceased).

It was presented in honour of their younger son William Sowden DeGaris.

As a Flying Officer with the RAAF, he disappeared without a trace while flying missions over Germany in the closing months of World War II.
