Mystery event throws golfers off their game

Last Wednesday 34 women took to the Mount Gambier Golf Club Course to participate in a mystery pairs stableford competition, sponsored by Vicki Clark and Leanne Hunt.

The pairs were chosen at random so competitors were unaware who will win the competition.

The course was set up with difficult pin placements, long off the tee blocks and with the course rated as heavy, the women found it very hard to score with no-one playing to their handicaps.

The winners, who were paired together scoring a combined 65 points, were Debbie Sheather (handicap 39), who had the best score of the day with 33 points – 17/16 points split and Janina Morrison (handicap 18) 14/18 split carding 32 points. Between the pair they totalled 12 three pointers and were worthy winners.

In second place with a combined 60 points was the pairing of Lois Harvey (handicap 28) 16/12 points split and Linda Boylan (handicap 31)with 14/18 split. Worthy of mention was Linda’s four points gained on the par 5 15th hole.

The pairs to win a ball each in the ball run down were Jess Parson/Penne Saffin, Mary Kentish/Denise Harvey and Jennifer Van Ritjhoven/Yvonne Shirley.

The pro shot on the 8th par 3 hole was won by Jennifer Van Ritjhoven.

Second shot into the par 5 15th hole went to Janina Morrison in A Grade, (two almighty shots), B Grade’s Mardi Goodes and C Grade’s Sue Ryan.

This week’s competition is another pairs game in the form of a two person pinehurst.

Meanwhile, 17 women competed in a stableford round on Saturday, playing in fine weather on a very well
presented course.

Janina Morrison (handicap 19) continued her purple patch, absolutely blowing away the rest of the field to register 42 points. Morrison recorded a birdie on the third hole to get four points, she also had eight three pointers and pencilled in 42 off the stick on the difficult back nine. The handicapper will be marking her handicap down after reviewing her score.

Second place went to Deb Fowler (handicap 33) with 35 points. Fowler’s split for the two nines was 18/17 points with a four pointer on the eighth par 3 hole.

In the ball run down five balls were earned by Camilla Knowles, Bev Pedlar, Jan Shanahan, Penne Saffin and Trudy Johnson.

The pro shot on the eighth par 3 hole went to Deb Fowler, while nearest the pin on the 16th par 3 hole was won by Helen Gregory.
