Aspecial delivery was made to Beachport on Sunday morning in connection with the multi-million-dollar upgrade of the town’s heritage-listed jetty.
Tug boat “Sea Pelican” with barge “Vincent” in tow made the 32-hour trip from Port Adelaide and entered Rivoli Bay at first light.
Workmen from contractors Maritime Constructions went out in their rubber dinghy to meet the tug boat and barge and stayed with them on the last leg of their 300km marine voyage from the capital city.
The arrival did not hamper the professional fishing fleet as most local licence holders have caught their 2022/23 quota and their vessels are back in dry dock.
However, the favourable weather meant that a number of recreational boaties were out on the water and got a clear view of the barge and tug boat.
The barge is fitted with a pile driver and a large crane.
The apparatus will be used to drive the new steel pylons into the seabed that need to be replaced on the jetty.
The originals were screw piles and date back to the jetty’s construction over 140 years ago.
There is a smaller boat on board the barge that will be used to manoeuvre it to where it is required alongside or backed up to the jetty.
After delivering “Vincent”, the “Sea Pelican” turned around and headed back to Port Adelaide.
Maritime Constructions personnel have been onsite for several months.
All costs associated with the jetty upgrade are being met by the State Government.
