Stroke of success

The Mount Gambier Golf Club hosted a busy day for 38 women last Wednesday, competing in a stroke round for the Monthly Medal, plus the second round of the Handicap Championships as well as the second round of the International Bowl and Putting Competition.

It was almost wintry conditions with rain and the course proved heavy going, plus the T Blocks set way back, which enabled only one golfer to play to her handicap.

Helen Heaver (98-26-72 nett) won the prestigious Monthly Medal for the third time with the best score of the day.

Helen’s split for the two nines was a very consistent 48/50 strokes.

Gail Stephenson (111-33-78 nett) finished in second place in Division 2.

It was great to see Gail, who has persisted in her golf after injury over many months, win a $15 club voucher.

Di O’Donnell (97-23-74 nett) won Division 1.

Di had a wonderful back nine of 46 off the stick and registered just 12 putts on the card.

Di’s score could have been much better but for a disastrous nine on the first hole.

Carol Davis (92-17-75 Nett) took out second place in Division 1 playing steady golf, her split was 45/47 strokes and she parred the 7th and 11th par 5 holes.

Nine balls were received by ladies in the ball run-down and went to Jess Parsons nett 76 down to Heather Barry nett 81.

The putting competition was won by Helen Gregory with just 28 putts for the day.

The speciality prizes went to Linda Boylan for the pro shot on the 8th, par 3 hole earning herself three balls.

The second shot on the 16th par 3 hole went to Heather Barry in A Grade, Di O’Donnell in B Grade and Gail Stephenson for C Grade.

This week’s competition will be a pairs game in the form of the Shylie Rymill Foursomes, incorporating the Club Foursomes Championship.
