Stud sale supports cancer charity group

A regular feature of a local sheep stud sale is the donation of the total proceeds of one of the top rams in the catalogue to the Millicent Cancer Support Group.

The long tradition of the Ryeview White Suffolk and Border Leicester stud continued at its recent annual on-property sale at Millicent.

Stud owners Michael and Julie Osborne have each lost family members to cancer.

The Osbornes also donated another top ram towards melanoma research at the University of Adelaide.

At the 2021 sale, the top rams were selected by Elders stud stock auctioneer Tom Penna and Elders Millicent staff Scott Altschwager, Jack Kain and John Jolly.

The cancer charity ram was a White Suffolk and it was purchased for $1000 by repeat buyer Quentin Ridge of Kongorong.

He paid the sale high of $1400 for a White Suffolk and he was also the volume buyer on the day with 10 purchases.

Regarding the Border Leicesters, the nominated melanoma research ram fetched $1000.

It was one of four bought by Bill Rogers of Millicent.

In all, Ryeview sold 18 White Suffolks and 11 Border Leicesters at the auction which attracted nine registered bidders.

Millicent Cancer Support Group representative Karla Werchon accepted the $1400 donation and thanked the Osbornes for their continued generosity.

Ms Werchon and her fellow support group members Peter McRostie, Gavin Watts and Marlene McRostie provided a barbecue lunch and beverages.
