Teen avoids jail over crash

ASouth East teenager has been given a 12-month good behaviour bond and been banned from driving for 18 months for driving without due care.

The teenager was involved in a head-on crash that killed three people on the Princes Highway at Compton in November 2020.

He was 16 at the time of the crash.

The sentence was handed down in the Mount Gambier Courthouse on Monday.

Millicent residents Ned and Nan Walker, aged 80 and 77 respectively, and their 55-year-old daughter Sue Skeer, died in the collision.

The teen was acquitted of charges of dangerous driving causing death during a four-day judge alone trial before Judge Penny Eldridge in Mount Gambier in July.

He pleaded guilty to the less serious crime of careless driving.

In a written statement to the court, the teenager expressed remorse for the incident and apologised.

Members of the Walker and Skeer families were in court on Monday and afterwards expressed their disappointment with the penalty.
