Tributes flow for Millicent grazier

Retired Millicent grazier and dedicated community worker John Stuckey is being widely mourned following his passing over the weekend at the age of 94.

He died at Millicent and District Hospital on Saturday night after a short illness.

His Stuckey forebears had been pioneers of the Millicent district but he had spent his formative years in Melbourne and Sydney as his Millicent-born father was a high-ranking banker.

He began farming a family property called Kopje at Rendelsham in the early 1950s and that began a long and successful association with the land.

Together with his wife Shirley (who predeceased him in 2013), they raised a family of three daughters and a son.

All the while, Mr Stuckey was involved with community affairs at Rendelsham and Millicent and that continued well into his twilight years.

Among the groups to benefit from his time and talent in key roles were the Millicent Rotary Club, Boneham Aged Care Services, Millicent Masonic Lodge, Millicent and District Hospital Board, St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Liberal Party, National Trust, Friends of Beachport and Canunda National Parks and school committees.

Last year, The SE Voice told of his passion for flying and how he regularly drove himself the 660km round trip to Murray Bridge for flying lessons.

Mr Stuckey donated precious wartime memorabilia associated with the Australian Flying Corps which had belonged to his pilot father to the Millicent National Trust Museum along with a display case.

The Australian flag will be flown at half-mast in the grounds of St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church until the day of Mr Stuckey’s funeral.
